Abstract
A resin stable in aqueous solution is prepared by heating 3.6-5 mols. of formaldehyde with 1 mol. of dicyandiamide and 0.3-1 mol. of boric acid until the product is soluble in water on extreme dilution. The boric acid may be added before, during or after the condensation between the other two ingredients. In the example dicyandiamide and aqueous formaldehyde were refluxed until the product had passed the insoluble stage and become soluble on extreme dilution. The product was then refluxed for 2 hours with a boric acid solution. A stable resin solution resulted which was useful for treating leather or paper or for crease-resisting fabrics. or for treating fibres of fabrics of wool, silk or acetate rayon or felt. The resin may be precipitated from the solutions by addition of a water soluble anionic sulphonate or sulphate, e.g. sodium or ammonium salts of sulphonated phenol- or naphthalene-formaldehyde condensates, sulphonated castor, neat's-foot or linseed oil, sulphite lignin, or cetyl, lauryl or stearyl sulphate, followed by acidification with aluminium sulphate. Specification 736,955 is referred to.ALSO:Water-soluble products obtained by condensing dicyandiamide with formaldehyde in presence of boric acid (see Group IV(a)), are used for treating fabrics or fibres of wool, silk or acetate rayon or felt, e.g. for making fabrics crease-resistant. In Example 5 a woven fabric is passed through a bath of aqueous sulphonated cetyl alcohol, then through an aqueous bath of the dicyandiamide-aldehyde resin and then washed and dried.
