745,711. Ball joints. AMERICAN STERILIZER CO. Dec. 7, 1953 [Dec. 12, 1952], No. 33934/53. Class 65 (2). A surgical head-rest has a stem 2 with a ball 3 received in a cup-shaped housing 4 having a rim of smaller diameter than the ball with an internal surface making contact with the ball at an angle large enough to avoid any tendency to wedge, the housing containing a slidable metal piston 9, with a central seat engaging the ball, and a body 8 of resilient elastomer substantially filling the space between the piston and the bottom of the housing, pressure being applied to the body 8, to clamp the ball in any required position, by a small piston 14 extending through the bottom of the housing and moved by means such as a screw 12; the pressure of the screw is transmitted directly by the body 8 from the piston 14 to the piston 9 until the body 8 completely fills its allotted space, whereafter the pressure of the screw is multiplied in hydraulic fashion in the ratio of the areas of the pistons. In the form shown, the lower part of the housing, containing the pistons and the body 8, is formed as a cup 5 screwed into the upper part, to provide an initial stress in the body 8, and locked by a set-screw 16.
