Abstract

745,462. Hydraulic classifier. DORR-OLIVER, Inc., [formerly DORR CO.]. Nov. 18, 1953 [Aug. 13, 1953], No. 22366/53. Class 82(2). [Also in Group XXIX] Particles are classified by being subjected in a liquid to an upward current whilst at the same time they are subjected to mechanical vibration. As shown, the mixed particles are supplied at F, the upward current of water being obtained by a pipe 16 discharging jets against the tank bottom 11. This latter is vibrated with linear motion, together, in this embodiment, with the tank side and connected to the non-vibrating portions by resilient connections 12, 13. The coarse particles are removed over a weir 18 and the fine particles over a weir 17. The separation size (or " cut ") of the apparatus is governed by the super-elevation S of the water in the chamber 19. The overflow pipe 20 is provided with removable rings 21 for adjustment of this distance. Many embodiments of the apparatus are disclosed including one having a control system (see Group XXIX) in which a pipe in which the superelevation is maintained, controls the discharge valve of the coarse particles outlet, thus controlling the " cut." An embodiment in which the overflowing particles are further classified by horizontally spaced vertical baffles is also disclosed. Instead of a pipe to supply the upward current, a perforate vibrating bottom through which the upward current may be maintained, can be employed.
