Abstract

An alloy which may be hot-forged or stamped consists of: Cu 85-95 per cent, Zn 4-14,8 per cent, Sn 0,2-2 per cent, the copper and zinc components having a purity of 99 per cent or better. A preferred composition is: Cu 90 per cent, Zn 9,5 per cent, Sn 0,5 per cent and an alloy of this composition is made by heating the pure copper to 1000 DEG C. and adding pure zinc and pure tin, in that order or simultaneously. The alloy is then degassed and cast. Articles, e.g. door knobs, window stays, ash trays, ornaments &c., may then be formed by hot stamping (see Group XXII) and a coloured film may be formed on the article by degreasing, polishing and placing in a furnace having a burnt town's gas atmosphere and kept at a temperature of 320 DEG -360 DEG C. The article is removed when the desired surface colour is attained. According to the Provisional Specification, the furnace may be kept at a temperature of 300-600 DEG C. for the production of the film.
