Abstract

A cast bearing material, consisting of 10-40 per cent lead with the remainder copper with or without tin, silver, nickel, iron, zinc or phosphorus up to a total of 5 per cent is heat treated at temperatures above the melting point of lead but below the solidus temperature of the copper-lead for a period sufficiently prolonged to change the "as-cast" structure to one consisting of interlaced sponges of copper and lead. The process is preferably carried out in an inert atmosphere. The period of heat treatment may be reduced by preliminary light cold working and any lead exudation minimized by preliminary heat treatment according to Specification 663,215. In an example given, a bearing material consisting of about 30 per cent Pb and about 1 per cent Sn or about 40 per cent Pb and about 0.5 per cent. Sn, with the remainder Cu in each case, was treated in a protective atmosphere at about 900 DEG C for about 24 hours. In this case the heat treatment was reduced to about four hours by preliminary light rolling.
