Abstract

744,668. Electrically-released switches, protective cut-out arrangements. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 5, 1953 [Nov. 27, 1952], No. 30091/52. Class 38(5) An electromagnet operating device for an N phase circuit protective or indicating device comprises N electromagnets 1...3 providing N pairs o: pole pieces with all the pole pieces extending intc parallel juxtaposed relationship to one another and co-operating with a common armature 4, means for pre-magnetizing the electromagnets so that the pole pieces become of alternate opposite polarity and attract the armature against a bias 8 and an alternating-current control winding 9 embracing the pole pieces, the control winding when energized deflecting the flux entering the armature from the pole pieces to cause the release of the armature. The winding 9 may be energized in accordance with the unbalance current of the circuit with which the device is associated and the release of the armature may effect the operation of an indicating device or of contacts 12, as shown. The electromagnets 1...3 may be pre-magnetized by a permanent magnet or a winding 6 connected to a D.C. source. The core of each electromagnet may be made in two halves, each half core-being formed by parts 13, 14 providing a pole piece 15 and an air gap 16. The two halves, e.g. 1, 1', of each core are assembled so that the air gaps 16 appear on opposite sides of the pole pieces 15 and the pole pieces assume opposite polarities when the common winding 6 is energized. The half cores are separated from one another by magnetic spacers to allow for the introduction of the winding 9 which may be formed as a single conductor which weaves in and out between successive pole pieces. Specifications 731,919, 742,114, and 744,474 are referred to.
