In a steam generator of the type having a chain grate and a furnace chamber lined with pendent water tubes 3 connected at their lower ends to headers, a series of sealing strips 61 extends, at a side of the grate, alongside a side wall header 5, each strip resting within a recess formed between an angle section 23 and a side member 29 of the grate and being inclined upwardly and outwardly of the grate so as to rest against the header. Ports 69 are formed in the angle section 23 for the escape of ash from the recess and between the outer side of the header and a subjacent part 99 of the furnace is provided' a flexible seal 101.
