Abstract

An electrical contact having a granular structure is formed from tungsten or molybdenum, with or without copper or nickel or silver, or a tungsten-molybdenum alloy, containing 0,1-1,5 per cent by weight of an oxide of one or more of caesium, barium, zirconium or thorium. During the production of the contact material up to 0,6 per cent of silicates of one or more of the alkali metals may be added to the tungstic and/or molybdic acid used as starting material. In a process for the production of a contact of tungsten containing thorium oxide, thorium nitrate and potassium silicate and/or sodium silicate in the appropriate proportions are added to a solution of pure tungstic acid, the resulting powder being dried and reduced, e.g. in hydrogen, at up to 1000 DEG C. The resultant powder is sieved and pressed into bars, the bars being pre-sintered in hydrogen and then sintered in a reducing atmosphere by passage of an electric current. The sintered bars are forged and heated to 2200 DEG -2500 DEG C. in a reducing atmosphere for 3- 4 minutes followed by rapid cooling to promote grain growth to 1500-2000 grains/mm2.
