Abstract

The hollow particles described in Specification 743,866 may be mixed with crude oil or a non-volatile component of crude oil and applied as a floating layer to crude oil to prevent the evaporation of volatile components therefrom.ALSO:A composition for preventing the evaporation of volatile components of crude oil comprises small hollow hole-free particles (e.g. synthetic resin, sodium aluminate or silicate cellulose derivatives, proteins and alginate particles) and crude oil or a nonvolatile component of crude oil, the particles having an average diameter of from 1-500 microns a liquid displacement density of 0.05 to 0.6 gr./c.c. The composition is applied as a floating layer preferably about one inch thick and in the form of a slurry to the crude oil the particles occupying from 20-70 per cent by volume of the floating layer, and preferably having an average particle diameter of from 25-250 microns, a liquid displacement density of 0.2 to 0.5 grm./c.c. and occupying from 40-55 per cent by volume of the floating layer. The floating layer may contain a small proportion of an oil-insoluble nonvolatile lubricant and the hollow particles may be prepared as described in Specification 743,866.
