Abstract
263,975. Allchemin Allgemeine Chemische Industrie Akt.-Ges., and Lichtenstern, R. Nov. 3, 1925. Macadamized roads; roads, special materials for.-The formation of dust on unpaved roads is minimized by the application to the road surface of a colloidal solution containing some constituents adapted to form on the road a layer insoluble in water and impervious to oil, and other constituents adapted to form above said layer an oily dust-binding medium. The insoluble and impervious layer may be constituted by a lime soap formed by the interaction of a sodium or potassium soap of naphthene acid and the calcium oxide or carbonate present in the road materials. For example, the surface of an existing road may be treated with a colloidal solution of 1-1¢ parts of naphthene soap in 30-40 parts of a heavy residual oil containing paraffin, to which 60-70 parts of a normal oil distillate have been added; or a composition containing 20-40 parts of naphthene soap and up to 100 parts of mixed oils may be used when the road material contains sufficient lime to react with all the soap present. In new road construction, the composition is applied, with or without water, both to the broken-stone-sand layer and to the completed road surface.
