743,762. Winding layouts for dynamo-electric machines. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Nov. 26, 1954 [Nov. 27, 1953], No. 32995/53. Class 35. Coils for a stepped armature wiriding, i.e. a twolayer winding in which the coil sections forming the upper layer in one slot are divided between two other slots in the lower layer, or vice versa, so that the slot pitch of some coil turns differs from that of the other coils, comprise a number of insulated complete coils 10a, 11a, 12a of the same slot pitch and a number of individually insulated preformed half-coil sections 10b 10c, 11b, 11c, 12b, 12c having a slot pitch of greater or less than half the pitch of the complete coils, the number of half coil sections being divided equally between the whole coil sides 10, 11, 12. Each coil-side comprises a pair of conductors mutually insulated but connected at the commutator and placed on edge, one above the other in slots. The complete coils pass from the top to bottom layer at end-turns 14 in the usual way, while the half-coil sections, shown as having a greater pitch, are joined by brazing and insulated separately at 18h, 18j, 19h, 19j. Equalizer rings may be connected to conductors 20.
