743,757. Printing-surfaces. ARNOLD, Ltd., P. & J., and SYDNEY, C. L. Nov. 10, 1954 [Oct. 5, 1953], No. 27222/53. Class 100 (2). A printing-surface of the kind comprising a sheet or pad having certain areas in relief adapted to transfer ink to a sheet of paper by the application of pressure has its working, ink-absorbing part made of a microporous or a macroporous polymer of vinyl chloride or a copolymer of vinyl chloride with a minor amount of vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate or an acrylate, the microporous structure being characterized by interconnecting cells which are not sealed at the working face. The microporous material may be manufactured as described in Specifications 565,022 and 576,657, [both in Group IV]. Fig. 1 shows a hand stamp having a handle 1 and a base-plate 2 to which is affixed a sheet of microporous material 3 by an adhesive 4. A layer of rubber may be interposed between the base-plate 2 and the adhesive 4, Fig. 2 (not shown), or a layer of macroporous material, e.g. as described in Specifications 727,679 and 728,600, [both in Group IV (a)], which acts as an ink reservoir may be attached to the base-plate 2 so as to be in communication with,the material 3, Fig. 3 (not shown). The microporous material may be made into a plate suitable for attachment to a metal plate of a priting press. The image may be made on the microporous material by engraving, or by extrusion between engraved rolls so long as the interconnecting cells do not become sealed at the surface.
