Abstract
In the production of alkali cellulose by the slurry steeping process wherein cellulose is slurried in caustic soda liquor in a slurry-forming vessel and passed, via a surge tank, continuously and under pressure to a slurry-separating container in which a pair of perforated, peripherally opposed, rotating press rolls is partially immersed, the alkali cellulose being separated on the surface of the rolls and the caustic soda liquor expressed through the perforations in the rolls being returned to the slurry forming vessel, hemicellulose is continuously removed from the system by withdrawing part of the expressed liquor and replacing it by fresh caustic soda liquor before returning the liquor to the slurry-forming vessel, the hemicellulose being removed at such a rate that the pressure of slurry passing to the press rolls and the press weight ratio of the alkali cellulose are maintained constant for a given temperature of operation and for a given rate of production.
