Abstract
Silicon tetrachloride, used in the treatment of iron surfaces to form diffusion alloys, is regenerated by passing the ferric chloride, formed in the diffusion process whilst still in vapour form, through a hollow cylinder down which ferrosilicon powder is allowed to fall.ALSO:Surfaces of iron, copper or alloys thereof are reacted with fine chlorine in conjunction with a chloride of Ti, Sn, Cr, Sb, p Zn, Al, Cu, Si, C, B or N at 850 DEG -1250 DEG C. Prior to treatment, the surface may be activated by oxidation and reduction, and the diffusion process may take place with the simultaneous application of supersonic waves. In a continuous diffusion process, the gas mixture may be passed in cocurrent or counter-current, or partly the one and partly the other, with respect to the objects to be treated. Ferric chloride, formed in the treatment of iron with silicon tetrachloride, may be passed in vapour form through a hollow cylinder down which ferrosilicon powder is allowed to fall, regenerating silicon tetrachloride and forming chemically pure iron.
