Abstract

743,119. Reciprocating pumps. HOLMES BROS. PAINT MACHINERY, Ltd. July 21, 1952 [April 20, 1951]. No. 9253/51. Class 102(1). [Also in Group XXIX] A pump comprises a power-operated piston 13 controlling an inlet port 9 and a spring- loaded piston 17 controlling a delivery port 10 and a relief port 11 through a passage 32 and grove 33. The piston 17 has a collar 17a and on the delivery stroke has a short free movement until it engages an abutment 21 loaded by an adjustable spring 18. During the downward movement, the collar 17a first engages an abutment 30 loaded by a light spring 31 and may move downwards, until the abutment 30 engages the stop 7b, to reduce the depression in the pump cylinder. The delivery 6 is connected to hydraulic loading jacks of machine rolls, if the pressure in the delivery 6 is at the predetermined value, then no liquid will flow, but if the pressure is higher, then when the delivery port opens, liquid will flow into the pumping space and press back the piston 17 and pass through the port 9 when it is next uncovered by the piston 13 ; at higher pressures, the piston 17 is raised to uncover the relief port 11.
