Abstract

742,813. Cycle spring forks. KAY, J. May 10, 1954 [May 11, 1953], No. 13021/53. Addition to 718,299. Class 136 (3). A fork assembly for the steered wheel of a cycle comprises a pair of steered forks 16 arranged so as to permit comparatively large vertical deflections of the wheel, a pair of telescopic stays 19, 20 being provided between the ends of the forks and a non-deflectible part 18 of the fork assembly, so that resilient movement of the wheel takes place under shock, the shock being transmitted in only a very reduced magnitude to the non-deflectible part of the fork assembly, the cross-section of the stays being modified along a part of their lengths below the telescopic portions, so as to provide a region which will bend more readily than the remainder of the stay when under shock and so compensate for misalignment of the telescopic parts 19, 20. A pressure-plate 18 is secured to the steering tube of the fork assembly between a head-nut 15 and a clip 13. The upper ends 19 of the telescopic stays are secured to the plate 18. Compression springs 23 are provided in the upper stay sections 19. The frictional resistance to the telescoping of the stays 19, 20 is increased by damping means formed by lugs 24 drawn together by a large diameter bolt 25. The part 26 of the stay section which is modified is elliptical, the major axis of the ellipse being transverse to the cycle frame.
