Abstract

546,389. Steering column assemblies for motorcycles; petrol tanks. BREWER, C. E. Jan. 24, 1941, No. 962. [Classes 79 (iii) and 136 (iii)] The steering column a houses a shock absorber comprising telescopic cylinders b, c and a spring or springs d, and a telescopic hydraulic damper comprising a tube s which is fixed at its upper end to the cylinder band within which slides a piston u secured at its lower end to the junction head of the front wheel forks. The piston head v embodies a flutter valve which, on rebound-i.e. when the cylinder s is moving upward relatively to the pistoncovers some of the fluid passages in the piston head and thus damps the rebound. The steering spindle e is an extension of the cylinder b and is centrally located by annular bearings f and adjusted by a locking nut g. An annular steering damper comprises two friction plates i, j, the plate i being keyed to the steering-column head h and the plate j being keyed to the steering spindle e ; the two plates are pressed together by a nut m threaded on the spindle e and bearing on a weather-proofing plate k through the intermediary of a dished or star-shaped spring l. The handlebar is attached to the steering spindle by two brackets p which are clamped by a bolt g around a split clip n surrounding the steering spindle. The bearing faces of the brackets and clip are notched to ensure a firm grip. The steering column is encased by the fuel tank, the forward portion of which houses the head-lamp.
