A carrier bar 3, bearing thread carrier 5, is reciprocated by the draw-bar 2, through rack and gearing 36, 37, 40, 41, sprocket 11 and reciprocated endless chain 7 and during, say, the simultaneous knitting of the shoulder part of a garment, a second carrier bar 4, bearing a thread carrier 6, is also reciprocated through a sprocket 42 on the same shaft as sprocket 11, a chain 141, coaxial sprockets 43, 11a and a thus reciprocated endless chain 8, the traverse of the bar 3 or 4 being determined by the entry and exit of a driver 18 or 18a into and from a slot 19 or 19a in a slide block 20 or 20a coupled by bolt 22 or 22a to the bar, as that part of the chain carrying the driver takes the vertical path between sprocket pairs 12, 13 or 12a or 13a and 14, 15, or 14a, 15a. The pairs of sprockets are borne on blocks 16, 17 or 16a, 17a adjustable towards and away from each other. When only carrier 5 is to be operative, over the full width of the garment, the carrier 6 is disabled by disengaging a dog clutch, or removal of the chain 141, or disengagement of the bolt 22a. Each driver 18, 18a consists of two rollers, one on each side of its chain, the slide block 20 or 20a with its slot 19 or 19a being correspondingly duplicated, connected by straps 52 and mounted on two rods 50, 51. Limit stops 24, 25, 26, 27 are adjustable by lead screws 28, 29, 30, 31 and are engageable by stop screws 32, 33, 34, 35 on the carrier bars.
