Abstract

742,604. Capping electric lamps and discharge tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. April 23, 1953 [April 26, 1952], No. 11215/53. Class 39(2). In order to pass one or more flexible leading-in wires through the apertures 56 of a cap 2 for an electric lamp or discharge tube with the aid of guide members which engage the wires while the cap is slipped over them, the ends of the supply wires, such as 3, 4, Fig. 1, are moved substantially into alignment with the axes of tapered or funnel-shaped recesses in an element 10 and introduced through the recesses, by axial movement relative thereto, into tubular guide members 11, 12 which engage the ends of the recesses at the side remote from the bulb and have a passage or bore wider than the narrowest part of the recess, after which the element 10 is removed and the cap 2 slid along the guide members 11, 12 and supply wires 3, 4 to the neck of the lamp bulb or tube. The element 10 comprises a plate-like body formed in two hingedly connected halves with mating surfaces 13, 14 which can be brought together or separated by interengaging gear mechanisms 10a, the surfaces 13, 14 being provided with pairs of recesses 15, 16 and 17, 18 of shapes such that in the closed position of the two parts they co-operate to present pairs of conical surfaces 19, 20 the narrowest parts of which are towards one another. The narrowest part of the truncated cone 19 has a diameter d<SP>1</SP> Fig. 4, less than that of the diameter d<SP>2</SP> of the cone 20, and the outer diameter d<SP>3</SP> of the tubular guide members 11 and 12 is substantially equal to d2, whilst the inner diameters of the members 11 and 12 are greater than d<SP>1</SP>. In order to render the tubular guide members 11 and 12 more rigid pins 11a and 12a provided with conical upper ends are arranged to be slidable therein, the diameters of the pins being such that their conical ends fit within the narrowest part of the funnel 19 and introduce the members 11 and 12 into the upwardly tapering recesses 20 of the element 10. The mating surfaces 13, 14 of the two halves of the element 10 are provided with preliminary centring members 21, 22, made of rigid wire, shaped to co-operate to engage the leading-in wires which usually emerge from the neck of a bulb in a curved form. In a modification the element 10 is made in one piece and formed with slits extending from an edge into the respective funnel shaped recesses, so that the wires pass into the funnels by lateral movement of the element 10.
