Abstract

521,917. Sealing leading-in wires. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Nov. 28, 1938, No. 34596. Convention date, Nov. 27, 1937. [Class 36] A short stem for an electric lamp or discharge device is formed by arranging a flared stem tube 10, leading-in wires 18 and exhaust tube 13 as shown in Fig. 1 and then heating the upper end of the stem tube to cause it to flow freely downward and form a solid mass of glass enclosing portions of the leading-in wires and closing the top of the exhaust tube, as shown in Fig. 2. Compressed air or gas is then admitted to the exhaust tube to blow an axial aperture 23, Fig; 4, through the mass of glass at its upper end. Air is also preferably blown into the space between the exhaust tube and the stem tube to round the joint therebetween. The thin glass coatings 31, Fig. 4, adhering to the leading-in wires are preferably removed to provide clean parts of the wires to which the filament may be attached. The skirt 12 of the stem tube may be attached to the main portion of the envelope of the lamp of discharge device by the method described in Specification 521,918, [Group XL]. In forming the stem the stem tube 10 is supported by a body 11 capable of rotation about a vertical axis and carrying a tube 17 which surrounds the exhaust tube, the tube 17 carrying a threaded ring 20 which supports the leading-in wires. Air for blowing out end of the exhaust tube is supplied through a nozzle 14 which also supplies air to the space'.between the stem tube and exhaust tube through holes 24 and the space between the exhaust tube and its surrounding tube 17,
