Abstract
A woven surgical bandage has its longitudinal edges treated with an adhesive binding substance to prevent fraying. It is preferred to use a 1 to 3 per cent aqueous solution of sodium alginate or molten paraffin wax. This is applied to the edges of the bandage by the lateral surfaces of the cutting knives used in its manufacture or it is applied to the edges of the rolled bandage by rollers or brushes or by passing the bandage over a flat plate carrying the adhesive. The adhesive used is such as not to hinder unrolling the bandage although it may have sufficient strength to prevent accidental unrolling when the bandage is being applied.
