559,027. Surgical gauze. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. Sept. 16, 1942, No. 13083. Convention date, Sept. 10, 1941. [Class 81 (ii)] Surgical gauze is impregnated with petroleum jelly or lanolin and carries finely divided 2-sulphanilamedo pyrimidine uniformly dispersed throughout the gauze. An emulsion of petroleum jelly, 2-sulphanilamido pyrimidine, trielhanolamine, stearic acid, and water may be used, a number of layers of the guaze and a suitable quantity of the emulsion being placed in a container and subjected to a pressure of about 15 lbs. of steam for 15 minutes in an autoclave to sterilize the contents of the container ; the gauze may be moistened with a dilute solution of a wetting agent e.g. trithanolamine stearite or a mixture of triethanolamine and stearic acid before the inpregnation.
