Abstract
742,043. Impregnated bearing surfaces; laminated sheet materials. CLEVITE, Ltd. Nov. 23, 1953 [Aug. 10, 1953], No. 32412/53. Class 140. A thin layer of cellulose fibres is impregnated with a synthetic elastomer or an elastomeric polymer and bonded to a relatively rigid backing layer, the treated cellulose layer being resistant to polar and non-polar solvents and having a high porosity so as to absorb and exude lubricant. The product is abrasion resistant and may be used for bearings, clutches or brakes. The cellulosic layer preferably has a high α-cellulose content and may be impregnated with an emulsion of neoprene, phenolfurfural resin or a butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer. The impregnated layer may be bonded to the backing by an elastomer and a phenol- or urea-formaldehyde thermosetting resin. The backing layer may be of metal, plastic or other rigid material.
