832,156. Stuffing-box substitute. KIND, P., and KIND, A., [trading as FRANKFURTER ASBESTWERKE P. KIND K.G.]. Aug. 26, 1958, No. 27333/58. Class 122 (5). [Also in Group VIII] A stuffing-box packing ring is punched out of a cardboard-like sheet of fibrous material in which every single fibre is practically completely enclosed in a finelydistributed solid lubricant. The fibres may be of asbestos, glass, glass wool, cotton, jute or synthetic materials, and the solid lubricant of graphite, talc, mica, molybdenum bisulphide, or ductile metals in powdered form. A bonding agent is generally used in conjunction with the solid lubricant in the manufacture of the sheets and may be of natural or synthetic rubber, resins or animal, vegetable or synthetic glues. The fibres may be coated with the solid lubricant by immersing them in a pulp containing the lubricant and the bonding agent or by dusting or blowing the lubricant on to fibres already treated with the bonding agent. The cardboard-like sheet is then formed from the treated fibres in a paper-board machine. The packing rings which are punched out of the dried sheets by a suitable press-tool, may have rectangular, square, round or U cross-section and have their peripheries split in various ways to facilitate assembly. As shown in Fig. 14, the rings 19 are mounted between metal rings 20, 21. The material from which the packing rings are made may include chemicals such as silicons or synthetic oils in order to increase its resistance to the particular substance being sealed.
