Abstract

A friction material, e.g. for clutches and brakes, comprises a sheet formed from a water-laid mass of natural fibres, cork and an oil-resistant synthetic rubber, and impregnated with a phenol-formaldehyde resin compatible with the rubber. Preferred amounts are 30 to 70% fibre to 70 to 30% cork; up to 20% (relative to the cork plus fibres) of the rubber and a rubber resin ratio of 1 to 1 to 1 to 4. Specified are:-fibres-asbestos and cotton linters; and rubber-55: 45 butadiene acrylonitrile.
