Forging; shearing.-A method of making ball-bearing races and the like comprises forming by pressing an intermediate workpiece 25, Fig. 4, having two partly telescoped parts 251, 25<SP>11</SP> cohering along a circumferential surface W, and then separating the parts along the surface W so as to form two races. A steel rod 1, Fig. 3, is heated in an induction heating coil 2, Fig. 1, is gripped in a chuck 3, Fig. 3, and a length 4 is sheared therefrom by a tool 6. The latter has a claw 7 which grips the blank 4 and conveys it to a die 8. A press platen 10 then moves toward the die, whereby a spring- loaded plunger 12 pushes the blank 4 out of the claw and into the die 8 where it is upset by a tool 11 to form a circular disc 13. The latter is then ejected by a pin 14, is gripped by a pair of mechanically-operated tongs 16, 17, Fig. 1, and conveyed to another die 18 in which it is pressed by a plunger 19 and sleeves 20, 21 to form the workpiece 25. The latter is then ejected by pins 27, 28 and a sleeve 23, is gripped by tongs 29, 30 and conveyed to a third die 31 within which it is sheared into separate races 25<SP>1</SP>, 25<SP>11</SP> by a hollow punch 32, and the disc 37, Fig. 4, is removed by a stationary pin 36, which enters the hollow punch. The waste disc is ejected through the hollow punch. The races are ejected by an ejection plunger 49 which acts through an ejector 50 pins 55 and a sleeve 35, to remove the smaller race, and through a spring 51, sleeve 53, pins 52 and sleeve 33 to remove the larger race; the larger race is removed first. The races drop into a shoot which delivers them to channels 44, 45 leading to rolling devices where the races are hot-rolled to accurate dimensions and are subsequently hardened and ground. Several rolling devices may be provided to deal with the output from the press.
