Abstract

965,280. Extruding; forging. F. B. HATE. BUR. Aug. 18, 1961 [Aug. 29, 1960], No. 29876/61. Headings B3H and B3P. A hot or cold blank 20 is pushed into a first die 13 and pressed therefrom between a press ram 17 and a backing member 3 into an adjacent die formed by radially movable die jaws 15 which are opened to permit removal of the pressed workpiece 20<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 5 (not shown). The blank 20 may be sheared from wire or bar in a multi-stage press, heated by mediumfrequency heating apparatus and transferred to a position between the ram 17 and backing member 3, Fig. 1. Die 13 and the radially movable die jaws 15 are supported in a dieholder 8 biased forwardly by springs 9 and movable to the left through a distance b. The blank is first pushed into die 13 by the ram 17. A sleeve 19 then presses the die-holder 8 through distance b and during this movement the jaws 15 are closed automatically by levers 16, Fig. 2 (not shown). A supporting sleeve 6 for the die-holder, biased to the right by stronger springs 7, is them moved to the left through distance a and during this movement the backing member 3 remains stationary causing the blank 20<SP>1</SP> to be pressed between the jaws 15 and over the nose 17<SP>1</SP> of ram 17. Upon its retraction the jaws 15 open automatically to release the workpiece which is retained on the nose 17<SP>1</SP> until stripped therefrom by a stripper sleeve 18, Fig. 5 (not shown). In another embodiment, Figs. 6-8 (not shown), the supporting sleeve 6 is biased forwardly by hydraulic, pneumatic or spring pressure and its right-hand end has a tapered inner surface which cooperates with the tapered outer ends of spring- loaded die jaws. In a further embodiment, Figs. 10, 11, for making chaplets the blanks are headed in the first stage of a multi-stage press and formed with a head on the opposite end in a second stage by the method of the invention, Fig. 11 (not shown). The two die jaws 15 may close independently of each other and at differing times in the pressing operation.
