Abstract

1336186 Forging; shearing; making universal joint spiders or pipe fittings F B HATEBUR AG 28 May 1971 [5 June 1970] 18028/71 Headings B3H B3A and B3W A shaped component with lateral portions such as a universal joint spider with three or four limbs or a pipe elbow or T joint is made from a bar blank which is first upset into barrel shape 15 between a fixed upsetting head 7 and a ram 6 and the upset blank is die forged between a female die 20, Fig. 3, and a male die 17. The dies permit lateral flow of the blank and the shaped component 31 is formed with burrs 32 between its limbs, Fig. 16 (not shown). The bar is supplied by a roller table conveyer through a heater and is then cut into bar blanks. The shear blade (2), Fig. 1 (not shown), moves each bar blank transversely and co-operates with a holding finger (3) to retain the blank between the ram 6 and the upsetting head 7. A spring- biased holding pin 10 is then actuated to retain the blank so that the shear blade (2) and the finger (3) can be withdrawn. After upsetting the ram is withdrawn and the blank again held by the pin 10 so that it can be gripped and moved to a deforming station. The upsetting head may be cooled after the upsetting. The deforming station comprises a pair of shaped die halves 18a, 18b, Fig. 3, between which the upset blank is held by a spring- biased pin 19 on the lower movable die 17 and an ejector pin 23 in the fixed upper die 20. The ejector pin 23 has coolant passages 26-28 through which coolant is sprayed on to the upper die surface after ejection of a shaped component. When the lower die 17 is raised the ejector pin 23 is pushed into the upper die 20. An annular die sleeve 21 limits the lateral spread of the blank as the die halves 18a. 18b are moved together. The die halves do not meet but are spaced by a distance "a", Fig. 6 (not shown), in their closest position to allow excess metal to form burrs between the lateral portions of th component. The shaped component is ejected by the central ejector 23 and a set of side ejector pins 24. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 13 (not shown), the ejector rod is made up of several sections (55a), (55b), (55c), with a common central bore. The outward movement of the pin is limited by the engagement of the enlarged section (55b) of the rod and a cup-spring assembly (56). This embodiment can be modified to prevent the component sticking to the ejector rod by providing a sleeve 73, Fig. 14a, movable relative to the rod and actuated from the same drive as the rod. There is a lost motion connection in the drive to the rod so that the sleeve is moved initially to perform the ejection. The rod 72 is used after retraction of the sleeve to co-operate with the spring biased pin of the lower die to hold the shaped component for transfer to a deburring station. The teburring station comprises a pair of holding pins 40, 41, Figs. 9 and 12 and a pair of co-operating punching dies 37, 38. The dies have cutting edges 39 to sever the burrs from the shaped component and these burrs 32 are held against the end face of an annular die ring 37b by spring biased pins 43 as the lower punching die is retracted. Thus both the component and the burrs are held during retraction of the lower die to prevent them falling on to the die. The component and burrs fall on to a conveyer when released and are subsequently sorted.
