Abstract

1327188 Making can bodies; capping STOLLE CORP 16 Dec 1971 [11 Jan 1971] 58512/71 Headings B3A and B3Q A can body making machine comprises a stripping and doming punch within a drawing punch both of which are carried by rams which are driven by tracks on a barrel cam, the tracks providing a dwell when the rams are retracted, a constant speed advance of both rams as a unit, a forward dwell for the doming and stripping punch, a rapid return for the drawing punch and a rapid return for the doming and stripping punch as soon as the drawing punch has cleared the formed can body. As shown, the machine also includes a device 11 for trimming the formed cans to length before they are discharged into a shoot. The machine is driven by an electromotor 19 and gearing 18 to a shaft 17 for the barrel cam 16, which has separate tracks 14, 15 for the rams 12, 13 carrying the punches 25, 26, Fig. 4. Air is supplied through the hollow stem of punch 26 and escapes past a seating 28 to prevent collapse of a can when the punch 25 is withdrawn from the can. Coolant enters the punch 25 through a passage 32 and is discharged through a passage 35. Feeding and restoring to form.-Cup shaped blanks from a shoot 40, Fig. 3, are fed by a lever 41 against a stop 47 aligned with the punches. The lever and stop have semi-cylindrical surfaces 46, 48 for re-rounding the blanks, and the lever is driven by a cam 20 on the shaft 17. Cups drawn through a die pack 37 fall on to a conveyer which advances them in steps to the trimming mechanism 11, the conveyer and trimming mechanism being driven by a chain 22 from the shaft 17. Relief mechanism.-A shear pin (39), Fig. 2 (not shown), connects the drawing punch 25 to its ram 12.
