[Also in Group XXIII] Mattresses, sewing; stands.-Mattress-sewing apparatus comprises a sewing-machine stand having a stationary base part and a verticallyadjustable sewing-head supporting part carrying a sewing-head with its needle inclined, a mattress-supporting table which is rotatably displaceable and is guided so that its periphery passes through a fixed point below the needle, and drive means comprising an electric motor connected to the sewing-head and to a sprocket chain fixed along the periphery of the table, the drive to the table being flexible. The apparatus shown comprises a sewing-machine 41 fixed at a suitable angle for sewing a tape on the edge of a mattress M, on a support 37 which is vertically adjustable to suit the thickness of the mattress, and a table-like support 17 for the mattress, which is mounted for universal movement in a horizontal plane on a stand 1 adjacent to the machine support. The table 17 is supported by rollers 13 on a circular track fixed to a frame 12 which is carried by rollers 13 on rails 6 forming part of a further frame carried by rollers 8 on rails 4 on the stand 1; the table can thus rotate and move in any horizontal direction. The rails 4 may be adjustably mounted on the stand 1 so that they may be tilted slightly to assist the movement of the mattress past the sewing-machine 41. The machine support 37 carries the driving motor 43 and clutch for the machine, and is slidably mounted on a pillar 33 by means of two collars 39, being adjusted and held in the required position by a lead-screw 46 geared to a handwheel 50. The table 17 with the mattress is guided relatively to the machine by a roller 31 engaging inside a depending flange 30 on the table, the outside of the flange having fixed to it a sprocket chain 54 whereby the table is moved and guided by a wheel 55 driven through a flexible shaft 56 and variable-speed gearing 57 from the motor 43. Starting and stopping.-The clutch connecting the motor 43 to the table-top may be controlled by hand or foot means or both; control means may be provided on both sides of the machine.
