Apparatus for stitching along a predetermined line comprises a sewing machine and a work holder rigid with a carriage adapted to follow the relevant movements between a rotary shaft and a template, the shaft rolling upon the template and being held in constact therewith by magnetic attraction, and the template being extensible to vary the desired length of an intermediate straight portion thereof. A sewing machine 1, mounted on a table 2 and driven by a motor 3, is adapted to sew around the edge of a collar blank X held in a work holder 5 movable with a carriage 14. The latter comprises a bar 12 which is rigid with work holder 5 and is slidable on rollers 17 mounted on a carriage 15, and a bar 18 carrying a roller 20 supported on carriage 20, the latter being provided with rollers 22 supported on fired bars 23. Work holder 5 comprises a fired clamp 7 and a lengthwiseadjustable clamp 8 carrying a pointer 10 movable over a scale 11. A motor 24, mounted on carriage 14, drives a shaft 26 which is held by magnetic attraction to the edge of a template 27 and rolls thereon to traverse the work holder under the needle 4 of the sewing machine. Template 27 comprises a straight centre section 27b and end sections 27a, 27c having straight inner portions 58, 59 which can telescope with respect to section 27b. Sections 27a, 27b, 27c are respectively mounted on plates 34, 35, 36 slidable on bars 28, 29 carried by fired bars 2a, 2b. A shaft 39, journalled in bar 2a and turnable by a wheel 38, has screwthreaded connections with plates 35 and 36, the arrangement being such that plate 36 moves twice as far as plate 35 on turning of shaft 39 to retain plate 35 equally spaced from plates 34 and 36. A bracket 54, fired to plate 35, carries two spacedapart magnetic plates 55 which constitute the section 27b. Magnetic plates 66, 67, separated by an electromagnet 70 and fired to plate 34, carry magnetic plates 60, 62 separated by a non-magnetic plate 61, plates 60, 61, 62 constituting the section 27a. Magnetic plates 68, 69, separated by an electromagnetic 71 and fired to plate 36, carry magnetic plates 63, 65 separated by a non-magnetic plate 64, plates 63, 64, 65 constituting the section 27c. A pointer 48 carried by plate 36 moves over a scale 49 corresponding to scale 11. Shaft 26 moves between the respective ends 72 of the template, and is adapted to operate respective microswitches carried by brackets 74 at the ends 72 for respectively starting and stopping the sewing operation. It is stated that the shaft 26 may alternatively be journalled in table 2 and template 27 mounted on the carriage 14.
