Abstract
889,396. Sewing machines. TRUBENISED (Gt. Britain) Ltd. Dec. 2, 1960 [Dec. 2, 19591, No. 40948/59. Class 112 Apparatus for guiding a work piece past the needle of a sewing-machine including a workholder supported on a carriage displacable in two mutually perpendicular directions by primary drive means operating in synchronism with the sewing-machine, is characterized by the work holder being movable relative to the carriage in one of the said directions by secondary drive means operated in synchronism with the sewing- machine. The movement derived from the secondary means may be displacement at a uniform rate and this movement, superimposed on the movements caused by the primary means, causes a pattern (see Fig. 5, not shown), to be produced on the material held in the work holder. The sewing-machine 8 is disposed opposite a carriage 10 supported for sliding movement on rods 11 which are themselves mounted for sliding movement on further rods 13. The primary drive means for moving the carriage in the two directions may be those shown in Specification 745,474 or 709,621. Alternatively servo motors controlled by a sensing member engaging a template may be employed. The work holder is secured to a table 14 mounted on the carriage so as to partake of its movements but is also capable of movement relative to the carriage, in the direction of the rods 11, by secondary drive means comprising a gear wheel 15 mounted on the carriage and engaging a rack on the table 14. The gear wheel is driven from the sewing- machine motor by shafts 17, 18 and 20 and a chain 21. The work holder comprises a base plate 22 having arms 23 which clamp and stretch the part of the material 24 which is to be worked. The remainder of the material passes under a guide rod or roller 25, over a ridge 26 and is wound on to a roller 27.
