Abstract

741,384. Thermal switches. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. April 26, 1954 [April 24, 1953], No. 11338/53. Class 38(5) [Also in Group XIIII Due to an electric heating element 15 at one side, a metal or other heat-expansible strip expands at that side first and is bowed until the temperature gradient, from the one side to the other, diminishes. To prolong the period of bowing the strip may have a high conductivity layer backed at the side remote from the heating element 15 by a low conductivity layer. As shown, such a layer, 13, e.g. of paper or adhesive, is sandwiched between two high conductivity layers 11, 12. The heating element is stuck to the strip and may be a zig-zag wire or printed circuit 15 on a paper, &c. backing 14, e.g.. it may be a strain gauge. As the layer 11 is heated more rapidly than layer 12, the strip bows so that contacts 19 are joined until the layer 12 heats up and the strip straightens again. A number of the switches may be connected in series to close a chain of circuits in rapid succession.
