Abstract

666,609. Electric heating resistances. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D., and ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. July 26, 1950. [June '21, 1949] No. 16461/49. Class 39(iii). An electrically conducting perforated metal foil sheet is interposed between, and attached to, insulating layers which are united to one another through the perforations to form a heating element. A number of such heaters may be arranged on the wings &c. of an aircraft for de-icing purposes, and in one embodiment, a heater comprises four sections, B, C, D, and E, each consisting of series connected strips F<SP>1</SP> of metal foil between rubber sheeting, and terminals H, H<SP>1</SP>, Sections B, C of each heater may be placed on the upper wing edge and sections D, E on the lower edge. The sections are separated by narrow strip heating elements N, and in the described embodiment they are heated continuously, whilst the other sections are connected in succession, by a series of relays, to the supply, means being provided to vary the heating time of the' sections. Each terminal H comprises an insulating block J secured to the wing, with a contact pin J<SP>1</SP> connected to a power supply conductor J<SP>6</SP> and to the strip F<SP>1</SP>. Each terminal H<SP>1</SP> comprises earthing means, and is generally similar to the terminal H except that the block is of metal and the contact pin is shorter.
