Abstract
Rubber in powder form is obtained from naturally or chemically coagulated rubber by disintegrating the rubber coagulum to crumb optionally with bleaching, and then subjecting the crumb to a second stage grinding in an attrition or hammer mill before or after vulcanizing. Any free hydrochloric acid may be removed by an ammoniacal treatment. In an example, cut lump coagulum was cleaned by means of a plantation scrap-washer, and was then passed through an attrition mill to give pieces 1/4 to 3/8 inch in diameter, vulcanization was effected by adding the rubber with water to an open heated steam vessel together with an aqueous slurry of sulphur, zinc oxide, sodium diethyl dithiocarbamate and a dispersing agent and the whole heated at 90-95 DEG C. for one hour. After drying at 100-105 DEG F., the vulcanized rubber was in the form of a free flowing powder. Talc is preferably added during grinding.
