Abstract
High-grade rubber is produced from the skin obtained in creaming natural rubber latex by allowing the said skim to coagulate spontaneously finely dividing the resulting coagulum, and treating the finely divided coagulum with an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution or ammonium hydroxide solution. The skim may be clarified by centrifuging or filtering before coagulation occurs. The coagulum may be finely divided by milling to form a wet crumb, and soaked for 20 hours in a 2.75 per cent aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide. Alternatively, the crumb may be heated at 122 DEG F. for about four hours in a 2 per cent aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide and then allowed to soak overnight. A rubber having improved ageing properties is obtained by treating the wet coagulum with an aqueous solution of alkaline earth metal hydroxide, e.g. calcium hydroxide, before treating with an alkali metal or ammonium hydroxide solution. A known anti-oxidant may be incorporated in the rubber so obtained.
