Abstract

Plasticizing-agents are incorporated in rubber by emulsifying them, adding the emulsion to a dispersion of rubber, and coagulating. By this means a larger proportion of softener can be incorporated than by milling. According to an example, 120 parts of pine tar are emulsified in 120 parts of water and 4 parts of concentrated ammonium hydroxide. This is added to 300 parts of 60 per cent latex with agitation. Coagulation may be spontaneous or may be produced by the addition of a usual coagulant. Other softeners specified are oleic and stearic acids.
