Abstract

A leather-like material is formed by adding to an aqueous suspension of disintegrated animal and vegetable fibres a tanning agent and a binding agent and separating water from the slurry, so as to leave a compacted layer. The tanning agent may be sumach, quebracho, or a chromium salt, &c., and the liquor may be mixed with an emulsified oil, e.g. sulphonated cod oil, colloidal neatsfoot oil, &c. A binding material is then added to the slurry, which is neutralized if necessary, and may be in the form of a latex such as indiarubber, guttapercha or balata or a synthetic latex. After agitation of the slurry a coagulating agent such as tannic acid is added and is then passed over a screen to which suction is applied so that a deposit of felted fibres is left thereon. The felted sheet is then compacted between press rolls. When starting with already tanned animal fibres a suspension of the fibres in water is treated with a detanning agent such as Rochelle salt, vegetable fibres are added and then a tanning agent the subsequent procedure being as described above.
