A detachable luggage rack for the roof of a vehicle comprises two side members 1, 2, a front transverse member 3 and a rear transverse member 4, and a base 5, each of the transverse members having telescopically associated with each of the opposite portions an adjustable coupling which is formed independently of the side members and is adapted for detachable anchorage thereto. Each side member is constructed from tubular metal as a frame of approximately aerofoil shape with upper and lower parts spaced by vertical struts 6. Each member has at the front a centrally apertured disc 7 and at the back a flat apertured plate 8. The apertures in the disc and plate are adapted to be engaged by screw-threaded anchoring studs 18 which form part of coupling members 15 secured to each end of the transverse members 3, 4. The stud 18 is secured to a tube 16 which is a sliding fit in the transverse member and is secured therein by a pin 23 passed through registering holes in the tube and transverse member. The side members are held secure on the studs 18 by dome-shaped nuts. The coupling members 15 may be prevented by various means, e.g. a wire loop 28 looped around a pin 29, from being completely withdrawn from the transverse members 3, 4. The transverse members are provided with spigots 36 of square cross-section which are inserted into correspondingly shaped ends of longitudinal members 35 which form the base 5 of the rack. The rack shown may have an additional transverse member extending across the base, in which case the longitudinal members 35 would be divided and the additional member would have a row of spigots on each side to engage the adjacent ends of the divided members 35.
