Class 38(5) In a circuit-breaker with arc-quenching by means of a pressure wave produced by the arc and guided by the breaker casing 4 so that it returns and impinges on the arc, the contacts 2. 3 are shaped as arcing horns and the casing is dimensioned so that the arrival of the pressure wave at the arc and the arrival of the arc roots at their end position coincide with a current zero. In Fig. 1 the contacts are pivoted and connected by gear segments one of which is coupled with a driving device. Arcing contacts 5 are provided and an in sulating member 6 assists arc-quenching. Fig. 3 shows a modified actuating arrange ment wherein rods 16. 17 hinged to contacts 2. 3 are connected by a common pivot 18 with a driving device 19. In Fig. 4 hook-shaped contacts are pivoted at 21, 22, the pivots being on opposite sides of the casing to the contact portions. Alter natively the pivots may be on the same side as the contact portions (Fig. 5 not shown). Contacts similar to those shown in Fig. 1, but inverted, may be provided with insulating material on their inwardly directed sloping faces (Fig. 6, not shown). In a further embodiment (Fig. 7, not shown), contacts shaped similarly to those shown in Fig. 1 slide longitudinally in guides located at an angle to the interior of the casing.
