Abstract

739,981. Automatic control systems. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. April 20, 1954 [April 20, 1953], No. 11368/54. Class 38 (4). The anode-cathode current of a thermionic discharge device such as an X-ray tube 11 is stabilized by applying the potential across an impedance 18, in the anode-cathode circuit, to a valve 19, while a valve 20 is fed with a reference potential from potentiometer 22, there being a diode 24 connecting the inputs to the valves 19, 20, and the potential developed in the load circuit 25, 26 being applied to a variable impedance, e.g. a saturable reactor 28, to vary the heating current to the filament of the device 11. The X-ray tube 11 is fed with A.C., so that pulses are supplied to valve 19; the diode 24 maintains the grid of valve 19 at least at the same potential as the grid of valve 20, but allows the grid of valve 19 to rise to a higher potential when the tube 11 passes a higher current, thus developing an output current in the reactor winding 27.
