Abstract
739,909. Particle accelerators. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Nov. 23, 1953 [Nov. 22, 1952], No. 29550/52. Class 39 (1). In a linear accelerator especially for protons in which the particles pass through a series of drift tubes within a wave guide, each drift tube is split longitudinally into quadrants. An electric or magnetic field is established between. adjacent quadrants. The particles are focused in a plane containing the tube axis. The planes of successive tubes or groups of tubes are given an angular shift. The effect of the spiralling of the field pattern is stated to be a total strong focusing action. The inner surfaces of the quadrants 1 are shaped as rectangular hyperbolas, but may be circularly concave like those of ordinary drift tubes. The quadrants, supports 3 and yoke 4 are of magnetic material. Each support 3 is embraced by a winding 5. Guard rings are provided at the ends of the drift tubes. Specification 716,373 is referred to.
