Abstract
799,870. Mass spectrometers. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Sept. 10, 1956 [Sept. 15, 1955], No. 27658/56. Class 39(1). In an electromagnetic mass spectrometer the magnetic field is divided into sectors of alternating gradient transverse to the mean path of the ions through the field in order to increase the dispersion. In an 180 degrees instrument the field may be divided into three sectors with the pole-pieces 4a, 4b in the end sectors convergent towards the centre of the apparatus and the pole-pieces 5a, 5b in the intermediate sector divergent. Reference is made to the " area of the magnetic field swept by a beam of given angular aperture."
