Abstract
854,474. Mass separators, linear particle accelerators. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. March 13, 1959 [March 13, 1958 ; Jan. 20, 1959], No. 8817/59. Class 39(1). A beta-ray magnetic separator for analysing the output of a linear electron accelerator 1, consists of three sector shaped magnets 5, 6 and 7, Fig. 1, or of four rectangular magnets disposed in two pairs 27, 28 and 29, 30, Fig. 3, so arranged that electrons having relatively lower energies follow longer paths than electrons having higher energies. In Fig. 1 the first sector 5 converts the beam 14 into a divergent beam, the second sector 6 transforms the divergent beam into a convergent beam and the final sector 7 restores the beam to a cylindrical shape. The successive bunches of high and low energies which are produced may then be acted upon by a second linear accelerator 18 so as to produce finally an accelerated beam of monoenergetic electrons. The relation- 'ship between the spacing of the sectors and the radius and angle of a sector are shown in the Figure. Suitable values for α are specified in the description. In Fig. 3, the two pairs of magnets 27, 28 and 29, 30 are symmetrically arranged with respect to the plane 16, the directions of the field in each magnet being indirected at B. The magnets may be adjustable in position or may have adjustable faces. The electron beam need not be cylindrical in shape.
