Abstract

739,776. Glazing strips. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. May 18, 1954 [June 9, 1953], No. 14496/54. Classes 20 (3) and 20(4). A resilient mounting strip 24, Fig. 2, for panels, comprises a main body portion, two wing portions 32, 38, co-operating with two lips 34, 35 on the body portion to form a pair of opposed longitudinal grooves 26, 28 for the edges of the panels 20, 22, and a longitudinal recess 40 for receiving a longitudinally extending spreader element 50, the wing portion 38 being retractable into the recess 40 to open the groove 28 and being retainable in the retracted position by the interengagement of complementary surfaces 44, 46 on the two wing portions. In mounting a glass panel 20 in an opening in a vehicle body, the strip 24 is engaged with the margins of panel 20 and the wing portion 38 retracted into recess 40 so that the surfaces 48, 51 forming the walls of groove 28 lie at right angles to one another, thus facilitating the placing of panel 20 and strip 24 in the vehicle body opening. A garnish moulding 30 may be attached to strip 24 by means of a slot 31. In a modification, Fig. 7, the wing portion 38 has a rib 52 to engage a notch 54 formed in the surface 44 of recess 40, when the wing portion is retracted into the recess 40 as shown in Fig. 6. The spreader element 56 may have a rib 58 for entering notch 54. The mounting strip 24 may be made of rubber, synthetic rubber or plastic, compounds such as certain of the vinyls and may be used to join panels of wood, metal or glass.
