Abstract
739,424. Heating air and coolant; turning- gear. CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO. Feb. 10, 1954 [Dec. 9, 1953], No. 3891/54. Classes 7(2), 7(3) and 7(5). In apparatus for starting a compressionignition engine 10, Fig. 1, comprising an internalcombustion starting engine 11 and a heatexchanger 13 in the air induction system of the compression ignition engine 10 that utilizes the exhaust gases of the engine 11 to heat the air entering the induction system, a blower 14 is arranged to compress and further heat the air from the heat-exchanger 13 before it enters the compression-ignition engine. The air is introduced into the inlet manifold 15 of the engine 10 through an air cleaner 12, the heat-exchanger 13, the blower 14 and a conduit 16 ; the heatexchanger 13 is connected to the exhaust pipe 21 of the engine 11 which has a common water cooling system with the main engine 10, and is arranged to be coupled to the flywheel of the latter for starting purposes. The heat-exchanger comprises finned gas channels 22, Fig. 3, and an air passage 24.
