Abstract
739,260. Moulding metallic &c. powders. MALLORY METALLURGICAL PRODUCTS, Ltd. Jan. 25, 1954 [Jan. 26, 1953], No. 2168/54. Class 87 (2). In making bodies, having a complex shape, from metallic powders, the powder, 13, is placed in the die 10 on a fixed bottom punch 12 and a preform punch 14, having a convex face 15, is inserted, the die then being subjected to vibrations as from motor 17, hand pressure being meanwhile applied to the preform punch 14 to lightly compact the powder 13, as .in Fig. 3. The preform punch is now removed and a final high pressure is applied to the powder 13 by a punch 18 having a convex face 19, after which the compact 20, Fig. 5, is sintered. The shape of the face 15 of the preform punch and 19 of the shaping punch are so related that the final article has substantially uniform density. Other shapes may be made using appropriate punches.
