Abstract

664,730. Making dies. PIRELLI SOC. PER AZIONI. July 15, 1949 [July 20, 1948], No. 18750/49. Drawings to Specification. Class 83 (ii). [Also in Group V] Powder metallurgy.-Sintered micro-porous metal is used as the mould, or the operative surface of the mould, in a process for making plastic articles, e.g. vulcanized rubber articles, this metal resulting in a venting of air trapped within the mould. The mould, or the operative part thereof, may be machined from stock micro-porous metal obtained by hot-pressing metal powder and then sintering: the powders used may be of different grain size. Alternatively, the. mould may be produced by pressmoulding a hot mass of metal powder (using a counter-die which is the obverse of the mould to be formed) and then sintering the shaped pressing, with or without subsequent coldsizing to impart to the pressing a smooth polished surface; the cold-sizing step may be carried into effect on the counter-die. The metal may be iron, iron alloy or aluminium; a steel mould may have a pore volume of 30 per cent.
