Abstract
633,802. Making coins. METAL & PLASTIC COMPACTS, Ltd., and WILSDON, S. C. Nov. 8, 1947, No. 29798. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Powder-metallurgy.-Coins or coin blanks are made by compressing and sintering metal powder. Mixed metal powders or alloy powders are compressed and sintered in an inert atmosphere either in successive steps or simultaneously, to form coin blanks for subsequent coining between dies. These blanks may be given a rough preliminary shaping during the compression, for example, so as to form a raised rim. Alternatively the compressing dies may be engraved so as to produce a finished coin. Suitable alloys comprise bronzes having 87-98 per cent copper and 13-2 per cent tin and nickel silver containing 10-30 per cent nickel and 90-70 per cent copper. Stainless ferrous alloys may be used.
