Apparatus for hulling seed or grain, e.g. oats, comprises throwing mechanism 17, Fig. 4, for projecting into a chamber 3, Fig. 1, through one or more openings 6, a jet or jets of seed or grain at an acute angle to a current of air passing through the chamber, e.g. at supersonic speed, between a compressed air inlet 2 and an outlet 4. A tube 5 may lead the outflow into a diffuser having a straight part 7a and a curved part 7b, Fig. 3, and the outflow may then pass into a cyclone-shaped receiver 8. The throwing mechanism may comprise a throwing wheel 22, Figs. 5 and 6, having upper and lower walls and blades 23 defining passages 24, housed in a stationary housing 25 having a cylindrical wall 26 with an opening 27 through which seed or grain are thrown. Seed or grain may be fed into the wheel through a tube 28 slidable in a rotatably adjustable sleeve 29 having a flange 31 carrying a curved, e.g. spiral, screen 32, and may be distributed by wings 33 on the hub of the wheel. The screen 32 may guide a row of seed or grain into the passages. The tube 28 may be positioned, in relation to the lower wall of the wheel, so that only a few grains, e.g. 3 or 4, are fed into each passage at each revolution of the wheel. Before the seed or grain reach the throwing mechanism 17 they may be sorted on screens 11, Fig. 4, and their hulls may be broken or cracked on grinding stones 13.
